Indian core sector growth slows to 2.2pct in April

Reflecting slowdown in the economy, the growth rate of eight infrastructure sectors in India slowed down to 2.2% in April because of poor performance of crude oil, natural gas, petroleum refinery products and fertilizers.

The Eight core industries have a combined weight of 37.90 per cent in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The combined Index stood at 142.3 in April 2012 registering a growth of 2.2% compared to 4.2% registered in April 2011. During 2011-12, the cumulative growth rate of the Core industries was 4.4% as against their growth at 6.6% during 2010-11.

Coal
Coal production (weight: 4.38%) registered a growth of 3.8% in April 2012 compared to its growth at 2.7% in April 2011. Coal production grew by 1.2% during 2011-12 compared to (-) 0.2% during 2010-11.

Crude Oil
Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22%) registered a growth of (-) 1.3% in April 2012 compared to its growth at 11.0% in April 2011. Cumulatively Crude Oil production registered a growth of 1.0% during 2011-12 compared to its growth at 11.9% during 2010-11.

Natural Gas
Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71%) registered a growth of (-) 11.3% in April 2012 compared to its growth at (-) 9.3% in April 2011. Natural Gas production registered a cumulative growth of (-) 8.9% during 2011-12 compared to its growth at 10.0% during 2010-11.

Petroleum Refinery Products (0.93% of Crude Throughput)*
Petroleum refinery production (weight: 5.94%) had a growth of (-) 2.8% in April 2012 compared to its growth at 6.6% in April 2011. In cumulative terms Petroleum refinery production registered a growth of 3.2% during 2011-12 compared to its 3.0% growth during 2010-11.

Fertilizers
Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%) registered a growth of (-)9.3% in April 2012 against its growth at (-)1.3% in April 2011. Cumulatively Fertilizer production had a growth of 0.4% during 2011-12 corresponding to 0.0% growth during 2010-11.

Steel (Alloy + Non-Alloy)
Steel production (weight: 6.68%) had a growth rate of 5.8% in April 2012 against its 2.9% growth in April 2011. Cumulatively Steel production grew at 7.0% during 2011-12 compared to an increase of 13.2% during 2010-11.

Cement
Cement production (weight: 2.41%) registered a growth of 8.6% in April 2012 against its 0.1% growth in April 2011. The cumulative growth of Cement Production was 6.7% during 2011-12 compared to its 4.5% growth during 2010-11.

Electricity
Electricity generation (weight: 10.32%) registered a growth of 4.6% in April 2012 compared to 6.4% in April 2011. Electricity grew by 8.1% during 2011-12 compared to 5.6% during 2010-11.
